What is a crown?

Sometimes your teeth are too damaged to be fixed with just a filling. After a root canal, a crown may be put in place to fill a large hole and prevent farther damage. Crowns ride over the weakened tooth providing strength and protecting the tooth against breakage. It takes two appointments to restore a tooth with a crown. In the first any decay is removed from the tooth and it is shaped to accept the crown. Between the two visits the crown is made, usually of high-strength porcelain over gold alloy, all ceramic material, or gold.

How do crowns work?

If your tooth has been infected for a while, it may be sensitive and likely to break if exposed to pressure. We will first remove decay from your mouth and make a mold for the tooth. On the second visit we will install it to match the rest of your teeth. Call us today.
